I encountered this lovely mural and its creator, Apayo, outside Covenant House the other evening.
It seemed like so much fun to be painting in the sun on a quiet night, and I was curious about the project, so I stopped for a chat (rudely interrupting her – but she was really friendly and didn’t seem to mind!).
Apayo says that this is her first mural in Anchorage. It’s a gift to Covenant House from the Bristol Bay Native Corporation because more than 50% of Covenant House’s residents are Alaska Native.
Apayo is inspired by “the wildness of my home, childhood memories and love for the wild animals,” which is clearly reflected in this work. Currently, she focuses on creating art for salmon.
I think this mural will bring peace and happiness to everyone who misses their home in rural Alaska. For the rest of us, it’s a beautiful way to appreciate the rest of our state amidst urban Anchorage.
You can check out Apayo’s other murals here. I can’t wait to see the finished piece!
