Design Detail: Alleyway Tile

Tile

Sometimes when I walk downtown, I like to take the alleyways instead of the main streets. Often, this means I get to say hi to kitchen staff on their smoke breaks or skirt stinky dumpsters, but sometimes it means I get to see a special detail like this tile adorning the backside of the Muffin Man (a former tile shop).

Do you have a favorite Anchorage alleyway?

Detail: Disco Ball

Disco Ball

Love the disco ball at Sub Zero! I never noticed it until a friend pointed it out (seriously, how could I have not noticed this sparkly amazingness?). My husband and I joke about putting one in our living room to make Grover go crazy (he loves chasing light, especially when listening to Macklemore. Random, I know.) and I love this bedroom redesign/redecorate featuring a disco ball: Celebratory Decay. He vetoed the antler chandelier I found on Craigslist, but maybe he’ll go for some serious shine?

Color Art Printing Co

Isn’t this sign great? The classic fonts and color selection on the weathered wood is just so appealing for some reason.  It’s hidden on the back of a building that faces an ally, and every time I see it I smile. Do you know of any cool old signs hidden away somewhere?

Details: Verdant Green

Green green

I can hardly wait for green.  Green leaves and green grass freshening up Anchorage, changing the face of our city.  For now, it’s still house plants and pretty upholstery, but soon we’ll all have real GREEN ushering in the summertime.

Detail: Turquoise Tiles at the Downtown KBC

Turquoise Tiles

I love these tiles – they cover the entire front of the curving coffee bar in the downtown Kaladi Brothers.  When I describe the tiles to people, they never seem to remember them, but the first time I walked in the door, they struck me as a beautiful way to use color and texture.  I have a half-wall in my home that I hope to someday cover in tile, either light blue or soft green squares or white penny rounds. Thanks for the inspiration KBC!

Detail: Rainbow Stairwell

Rainbow Stairwell

Isn’t this groovy? It’s the stairwell of the Alaska Department of Health and Human Services building.  I’m always happily startled when I see it – such a playful expression of color for a government building! I would love to know who’s responsible for this lighted rainbow…
