Today was Lemonade Day in Alaska! Lemonade Day was founded in 2007 by Michael Holthouse to inspire “today’s youth to through helping them start, own and operate their very own business…a lemonade stand.”

Great Alaska Seafood Cook-off
Last night was the 2nd Annual Great Alaska Seafood Cook-off and it was SO COOL. Six of Alaska’s best chefs competed to represent our state at the Great American Seafood Cook-off in New Orleans, August 2013.
USS Anchorage Adventures
The USS Anchorage left town this evening after five days of commissioning festivities, marking the conclusion of our first centennial celebration event. Not a bad way to kick off two years of fun!
Talking Art
I recently spent a couple of days with some of the makers and shapers of Alaska’s arts. It was invigorating to meet such a diverse and thoughtful group of people. As someone who wholeheartedly appreciates the arts, I loved the experience.

Seven Chose Batman (and Other Top 40 Tidbits)
On Friday I attended the Alaska Journal of Commerce‘s Top Forty Under 40 awards luncheon. Although I’ve always enjoyed this event, it was really special for me this year because I was one of the 40! I shared the experience with my husband, brother, parents, and in-laws, who all came to cheer me on and keep me from being TOO nervous when it was my turn on stage.

Choose Respect 2013
Today was Governor Parnell’s Choose Respect rally, which raises awareness about domestic violence and sexual assault. More than 140 communities are participating this year. In Anchorage, we marched from the park strip to town square to the wailing of bagpipes and deep drum beats.
Atwood Estate Sale
Most west-side kids grow up knowing where the Atwood house is – located just off Forest Park, the house is large, white with dark shutters, greek columns, and formal landscaping, and certainly makes an impression. It looks very grand, and not really all that “Alaskan” (ironic, because Bob Atwood is a prominent figure in Alaska history), at least by current aesthetics.
