The ceremonial start of the Iditarod, combined with Fur Rondy, is a big deal in downtown Anchorage. Streets are shut down to traffic and overflow with pedestrians cheering for their favorite teams, tail-gating, and generally having a grand time.

Those Crazy Chickens
Last weekend we decided to stop by the Sport Fish Hatchery for one last look at the salmon.
One Year of Grover
One year ago, I woke up early (for a weekend, at least), dressed in green, and joined some friends for the Shamrock Shuffle. It was festive and fun, crazy costumes abounded, and there were libations awaiting thirsty shufflers at the end – a pretty cool event that I would usually be reveling in. But all I could think was PUPPYPUPPYPUPPY! Because that afternoon, we finally added a dog to our little family: Grover.
Visiting the Vet
Grover LOVES going to the vet. This is strange to me – growing up, our dogs were decidedly NOT pro-vet. But Grover trots in, explores excitedly, makes new friends (like these three cuties from our last visit!), stares at cats (he’s still not sure what to make of them), soaks up love from the staff, and then stares at Dr. Pala, his favorite vet, like she’s the most amazing thing he’s ever seen (smelled?).
Puppy Love
Did you see this photo and story in the Anchorage Daily News on Jan. 10? It was a relief that no one was injured in the fire, including the adorable boxer, Champ, in the photo above.
Surprise Pig
Look at this cute little pig with his broken nose. He’s nestled by a tree near my home. I don’t know where he came from; he just appeared one day, a surprise pig.
Dog Friendly
Last Seattle post I promise (until my next trip!). When we went on our furniture-browsing binge, it was at University Village, where, in addition to being very visually appealing despite being mostly “signature national retailers,” DOGS ARE WELCOME.
Detail: Sailing Through Downtown
It’s so easy sometimes to be focused on getting from here to there, or texting/checking email while walking. I try to remind myself to slow down just a little bit and enjoy the world around me. This ship sailing through downtown is a little surprise for your eyes when you happen to glance up. I love surprises like this!
Little Dog Play Group
Grover and I had a fun experience this morning. A few weeks ago, Ellen at Second Run (the purveyor of second-hand dragons! and all sorts of other amazingness) told me about a little dog play group at Rocketship Park (you may know it as Valley of the Moon… but it will forever be Rocketship Park to me!).
Sunshine (and Snow!) After the Storm
I like storms. I like being cozy inside, curled up under a blanket watching the weather, or going outside and feeling the wind/rain/snow whirl around me (and then going inside and curling up under a blanket).
