I’ve always enjoyed meeting people who have just moved to Anchorage, or hearing people’s stories that open with, “I came to Alaska for a visit. That was thirty years ago.” I love hearing about how they ended up here, why they stayed, and what they think of our city.

Portrait Alaska
“There have been hundreds of books produced that feature Alaska’s beautiful natural environment, but very few books have featured the people of Alaska.” – Clark Mishler
The Legend of Linny Pacillo
One of my favorite local legends is that of Linny Pacillo. Linny and her sister, Susan, were Anchorage’s parking fairies in the 1990’s. They would dress in tights and tutus, feed parking meters that were out of time, and save countless Achoragites from tickets while protesting the overly strict parking authority. Parking fairies to the rescue!
Something’s Sizzlin’ in Downtown Anchorage
A couple days ago, my friend Ryann and I got together for lunch at the Sizzlin’ Cafe – brand new to me, an old favorite for her. I can’t believe that not only had I never been there, I’d never even heard of it – I’ve been missing out for the last seven years! The café is on 3rd Avenue, just a couple of doors down from the Woodshed, across the street from the Hilton.

Great Anchorage-based Blogs
Yesterday when I posted the photo of the Atlas on top of the Fur Factory, I started imagining what some of my favorite Anchorage bloggers/writers would say about the photo.
Another Great Kickstarter Project – PopCycle: Keeping Alaska Cool
I’m loving crowd-sourced funding opportunities recently – it gives me the chance to support really cool projects in Anchorage that might not be possible without multiple people pitching in to help out. I’m super exited about Kesey Pollock’s Melting Bodies, Clark Mischler’s Portrait Alaska, and the Momentum Collective’s Aerial Investigation.
And now, there’s a new project to love: Kait Reiley’s PopCycle: Keeping Alaska Cool.

Alaska-chic Qiviut and Shopping Local
Check out my AK-chic co-worker Jenn! She’s rocking a qiviut scarf made by an artist in Palmer, purchased at Sevigny Studio here in Anchorage. Not featured in this photo are her gorgeous forget-me-not Romney-painted Danskos. Yep, pretty much a classy, comfy, AK-artist-awesome outfit. And, knowing Jenn, I’m willing to bet that it’s all purchased locally.
Guitar Hero
A year and a half ago, I married my sweetheart and best buddy. A friend of ours, John, learned U2’s “All I want is you” for the occasion, but didn’t end up performing.
My Dad’s a (Second Place) Chili Champ!
My dad entered a chili cook-off for Anchorage Downtown Rotary – it was a bit of a blind leap, considering he’d never made chili before.
The Tale of the Golden Pen
Once upon a time, there was a volunteer cross-walk guard who guided Romig Jr. High students as they crossed Minnesota on the way to school. A student mentioned in passing that her 13th birthday was the next day.
