Actually, a “Blue Hollomon” isn’t a “what;” it’s a “where” (cool funky colorful fun friendly local art gallery) and a who (co-owners Georgia Blue and Gina Hollomon).
Getting to Know Your City
A friend of mine, Anne Helen Petersen, shared “Interview with My Mom, the Scientist” on the Hairpin today. In addition to being a thoughtful conversation between two generations of super smart women, there is an interesting bit of the interview where Annie’s mom talks about how she acquainted herself with Lewiston, ID on her first visit when she and her husband were contemplating moving there with their two small children, and what she wishes she would have done instead.
Detail: Secret Downtown Door
Have you ever noticed this door before? It’s set back from the sidewalk, nestled between the Glacier Brewhouse and Orso. It’s hard to see in this picture, but it says “Not the Imaginarium” just under the window panes.
The Bell Tolls
This evening, we attended a ceremony at the Alaska Fallen Firefighter Memorial outside of Fire Station 1 on 5th and A Street.
Love Note: Gold Dust
Stories Around Town: Food, Fashion, and Art
I picked this photo to complement the last story in this post, which profiles my #1 Anchorage restaurant, Kincaid Grill. If you haven’t ever dined there, I highly recommend treating yourself to a delectable meal!
Here are a few of my favorite stories for you this week; it’s all about food, fashion, and art in Anchorage this week. Oh, and skiing too!

Urban Astronomy
If you’re standing at the corner of 5th and G, you’ve probably noticed the yellow-tiled half-globe nestled in a crook of the Alaska Center for Performing Arts. This is a replica of the sun (complete with accurate sun spots!) and is the start of Anchorage’s Light Speed Planet Walk, which was inspired when Eli Menaker visited the Carl Sagan Memorial Planet Walk in Ithaca, New York.
Love Note: Crush Patio Planters
Stories Around Town: A Love Story, Giant Pumpkins, and that Song You Can’t Stop Singing
This photo is from a couple of years ago, and despite the rain that accompanies autumn, I’m sure you can see why it’s my favorite season. I hope everyone had grand adventures this weekend/relished being a bum/was hyper-productive/or enjoyed time with friends (or all of these options combined!).
My ‘stories around town’ are late, but still great! Read on for some of my favorites during the last few weeks.
Alaska State Fair Food
Apart from the gigantic produce, adorable baby pigs, ferris wheel, crazy fair hair, curious goats, people watching, Bret Michaels/Phillip Phillips/Foreigner/Bill Cosby/whichever-act-has-sunk-low-enough-or-not-risen-fast-enough-and-is-on-the-fair-circuit, local artists, and hawkers who shout, “Hey you! Yeah, you with the face!” people seem to go the State Fair for the food.
