One year ago, I woke up early (for a weekend, at least), dressed in green, and joined some friends for the Shamrock Shuffle. It was festive and fun, crazy costumes abounded, and there were libations awaiting thirsty shufflers at the end – a pretty cool event that I would usually be reveling in. But all I could think was PUPPYPUPPYPUPPY! Because that afternoon, we finally added a dog to our little family: Grover.
Outside Magazine and Alaska Distillery Awesomeness
When I was younger and worked at Alaska Mountaineering and Hiking, my favorite magazine was Outside. Over the years, I slowly stopped reading it in favor of fashion and shelter magazines (and now, I seldom buy magazines at all – I prefer blogs and websites these days. Plus, 16 ways to curl my hair and a quiz to find out if he thinks I’m THE ONE just aren’t all that fascinating any more, although reading about DIY furniture rehab and how to pick the right shade of gray for your living room still make me inordinately happy) but recently it’s worked its way back into my awareness.

Another Great Kickstarter Project – PopCycle: Keeping Alaska Cool
I’m loving crowd-sourced funding opportunities recently – it gives me the chance to support really cool projects in Anchorage that might not be possible without multiple people pitching in to help out. I’m super exited about Kesey Pollock’s Melting Bodies, Clark Mischler’s Portrait Alaska, and the Momentum Collective’s Aerial Investigation.
And now, there’s a new project to love: Kait Reiley’s PopCycle: Keeping Alaska Cool.

Alaska-chic Qiviut and Shopping Local
Check out my AK-chic co-worker Jenn! She’s rocking a qiviut scarf made by an artist in Palmer, purchased at Sevigny Studio here in Anchorage. Not featured in this photo are her gorgeous forget-me-not Romney-painted Danskos. Yep, pretty much a classy, comfy, AK-artist-awesome outfit. And, knowing Jenn, I’m willing to bet that it’s all purchased locally.
Summer is Coming…
Summer is coming! Please note – this is not to be read in an ominous Game of Thrones “winter is coming” kind of way; read it in the same tone of voice a six-year-old would use to say “Christmas is tomorrow!”
727 Landing Media Round-up
The big news last week (besides all the Fur Rondy fun) was the 727 landing at Merrill Field (usually used for smaller planes; the Anchorage Assembly granted special permission for this event). FedEx donated the Boeing 727 to the University of Alaska Anchorage for their maintenance program.
Sled Dogs and a Ferris Wheel in Downtown Anchorage
Yesterday was a great day: foggy in the morning, sunny in the afternoon and evening. Warm enough to not freeze when walking around, cold enough that it didn’t get sloppy. Perfect for the last day of Fur Rondy!

Love Note: You’ve Got Mail
One of the best surprises is opening the mailbox and finding a letter or care package. It’s not the kind of love note I usually write about (since my focus is love notes to our city) but it’s the perfect way to tell someone they are special! A handwritten card filled with good thoughts, especially in this age of instant, electronic communication, brightens any day.
Guitar Hero
A year and a half ago, I married my sweetheart and best buddy. A friend of ours, John, learned U2’s “All I want is you” for the occasion, but didn’t end up performing.
